How we work
Numada was established in 2013. Its partners have been developing and financing projects in Indonesia since 1991. The firm is a foreign investment company licensed by BKPM, based in Jakarta.
Partners do the work.
The partner who takes the first meeting is the partner who does the work. Behind them sits a bench of senior specialists across energy, property, forestry, technology and safety, and a layer of qualified junior staff engaged project by project. That is how a firm of this size covers this much ground.
Advisory, or partnership.
We bill for advice in the ordinary way when advice is what a principal needs. Some projects are worth building rather than billing, and in those we take a position alongside the principal and carry the same risk they do. We will say which of the two we think applies, usually in the first conversation, and occasionally the honest answer is neither.
Coming in, or already here.
For international principals, we are straightforward about the practicalities and the difficulties of operating in Indonesia. For domestic principals, we help position the business to meet what international capital and counterparties will expect when they arrive. In both cases the advice sits in the context of what is happening regionally, because capital does not evaluate Indonesia in isolation.
What we structure and execute.
We structure and execute transactions: the sale and leasing of real property and assets, public and private capital markets issues, project financing, and the acquisition or disposal of companies and business lines. We connect investors with projects, buyers with sellers, and lessees with lessors.
We also manage projects end to end, from planning, development and financing through to construction, operations and maintenance. Licensing, land acquisition, procurement and compliance are the parts of that which move slowest in Indonesia, and they are the parts we know best.
What we do not take on.
We turn work down fairly regularly, usually for one of a few reasons. The engagement would use us as a licence to be in the room and nothing more. The principal is looking for confirmation rather than advice. The timeline assumes a regulatory process will move faster for us than it does for everybody else, which it will not. Or the partners are already carrying as much as they can personally run, which is a real constraint in a firm structured this way and we would rather say so than staff around it.
Where we sit alongside others.
We work alongside international engineering consultancies and investment banks rather than in place of them, and we help procure the architects, engineers, contractors, lawyers, bankers, tax advisors and accountants a project needs. Where a principal’s own team is not complete, or has not worked here before, we supplement it until it is.
If you are building something real in Indonesia, we should talk.
Tell us what you are building and where it stands. A partner will read it and reply.
